Planning a trip to Iceland is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming with so many breathtaking places to visit, this is why we created this guide. To make the most of your adventure, it’s important to plan smartly, travel safely, and set realistic expectations. Below you’ll find essential tips to help you enjoy Iceland to the fullest.
Plan Your Stops Wisely
Iceland is full of stunning landscapes, waterfalls, glaciers, black sand beaches, and geothermal wonders. However, trying to see everything in one trip is impossible.
When planning your stops:
- Be realistic about time – Not only should you consider driving distances, but also how long you’ll actually spend at each location and how long it will take you to arrive walking from the parking and the way back.
- Always think in the breaks and times for snacks, cocking or ordering food, toilet…
- Account for detours – Some destinations require extra driving time away from the Ring Road (Route 1). Always factor this into your itinerary.
Fuel Up – Gas Stations Can Be Far Apart
Outside the main towns, gas stations can be few and far between. Even along Route 1, distances between stations can be longer than expected. Always keep your tank as full as possible, especially when driving into remote areas. Running out of fuel can quickly become a serious issue due to Iceland’s vast and isolated landscapes.
Daylight Hours Vary by Season
The amount of daylight changes dramatically in Iceland:
- Summer (June–July): Up to 24 hours of daylight in some areas.
- Winter (December–January): Only 3–5 hours of daylight.
- Spring and Autumn: 10–16 hours, depending on the month.
Knowing this is crucial for planning sightseeing, driving, and outdoor activities. Always schedule enough time to travel in daylight, especially in winter when roads can be icy.
Safety First
- Check road and weather conditions daily at safetravel.is, road.is and vedur.is.
- Never ignore warning signs or road closures. They are there for your safety.
- Dress in layers and be prepared for sudden weather changes. Even in summer, temperatures can drop quickly.
- Drive carefully – Gravel roads, blind hills, and narrow bridges are common.
General Travel Tips
- Book the accommodations and car rentals in advance OR campervan, especially during high season (June–August).
- Bring a reusable water bottle. Icelandic tap water is safe and delicious.
- Respect nature. Stick to marked paths and never disturb wildlife.
How Much Time Do You Need?
Iceland has so many incredible places to see that you would need more than a month to explore every point on the map. Most travelers visit for 7–14 days, so prioritizing based on your time and interests is key.
